Draw a Straight Line

La Monte Young's Composition 1960 #10 consists of a single instruction: "Draw a straight line and follow it."

Ina Blom argues this piece marks a turning point—straight lines and infrastructural sensibility, sensorial synchronization, alignment. The line as score. When Nam June Paik performed it at the first Fluxus concert in Wiesbaden, he dipped his head in ink and dragged it down a sheet of paper. The instruction became a body became a mark.

Walking is drawing a line through space. The path from Neukölln to Wedding is a score. I perform it differently each time. Same instruction, different result. The practice is in the difference.
